Agriculture: We’re In It For Life

This weekend I had the privilege of attending the 2012 Agriculture for Life Harvest Gala. I wanted to share a bit about the Ag for Life initiative and this annual event because it’s a cause that is near and dear to me. The Ag for Life quest is to “deliver educational programming that serves to improve rural and farm safety, all while building a genuine understanding and appreciation for the role agriculture plays in society, the environment and the economy.”

Ag for Life brings together diverse industry and stakeholder groups who partner with and support community-based programs. Ag for Life recently announced an investment of more than $1.2 million to four programs including the Classroom Agriculture Program, Progressive Agriculture Foundation’s Safety Days, the Multicultural Heritage Centre’s City Slickers program, and Sustainable Food Edmonton – Little Green Thumbs.

Proceeds from the Harvest Gala support educational programming that will improve farm safety and build an understanding of the impact agriculture has on life.

Those of you who are regular readers of this blog will know of my passion for connecting farm and food. And Ag for Life is helping do just that.

As Premier Alison Redford said in her keynote address, agriculture is Alberta’s largest renewable industry. She went on to say, “Agriculture is our history, our traditions, our values.”

We need to remember that history, those traditions and values, and share it with others who are not connected to agriculture. We need to help others understand the impact agriculture has on their lives whether it be the food they eat, the clothes they wear or the products they use.

Here are a few snapshots from the 2012 Harvest Gala.
